Renovating, Repairing or Painting your Center/School?

Lead is a powerful neurotoxin that was used in the building industry until it was banned in 1978. If you don’t know if you have lead in your center, you can have an independent evaluation done by a certified inspector or risk assessor. You can find these professionals through the National Lead Information Center, 1-800-424-LEAD.

Federal legislation to be enacted in April 2010 requires child care centers that contain lead or were built before 1978, and are planning to renovate, repair or paint, be educated by their contractor about the risks involved in undertaking such a task. A new pamphlet, Renovate Right, Important Lead Hazards for Families, Child Care Providers and Schools, can answer your questions about how to choose the right contractor and how to best prepare for the project.
