Children's Biophilia

Our latest article, written for Community Playthings, is Nurturing Children's Biophilia: Devlopmentally Appropriate Environmental Education for Young Children. The article was just published on our website and the Collage newsletter, www.communityplaythings.com/mailing/collage/currentcollage.html. Biophilia (love of living systems), first introduced and popularized by Edward Wilson in his 1984 book, Biophilia, refers to human's innate, genetically predisposed tendency to explore and bond with the natural world. For biophilia to develop, however, children must be given developmentally appropriate opportunities to learn about the natural world, based on sound principles of child development and learning. Children's biophilia becomes the foundation for later positive environmental values and behaviors now essential to preserving our environment. You can read the article here.
