Identify as video game players

June 2015 research found that 49% of American adults play video games on a computer, TV, gaming console or portable device [Pew Research Center]. The research also found that 60% of adults, including women, agreed with the statement “most people who play video games are men.” How wrong that proved to be! The gender breakdown of video game players was almost exactly the same for men (50%) as women (48%).

However fewer women identified themselves as “gamers” than men (6% versus 15%). The reason that fewer women call themselves gamers, although they probably are, may have a lot to do with the male gender bias in some gaming communities, so women don't want to be identified with them by calling themselves gamers. And there's also the issue of women being under represented in games that may affect that women don't want to be identified as serious video game players (gamers).
