NEW ADA RECREATION & AMUSEMENT GUIDELINES
On September 3, 2002, the Access Board published new ADA Guidelines that
address access for persons with disabilities to a wide variety of recreation
facilities. The guidelines specify accessibility requirements for amusement
rides, boating facilities, fishing piers & platforms, golf courses and driving
ranges, miniature golf courses, sports facilities, swimming & wading pools,
and fitness clubs. The new Guidelines are effective 3 October 2002 for all
new or renovated facilities.
The Guidelines require an accessible route to all facilities plus many accessibility
requirements within the facilities. For miniature golf courses, a minimum
of 50% of the holes must be accessible and have accessible routing at the
beginning and end of the accessible holes.
