Steps in Selecting the Right Paint for the Job
Paint is the easiest and least expensive way to update space. In this short article we will look at the steps involved in selecting the right paint for the right location.
The first part of the process in selecting the right paint is to look at selecting the right shade. The paint that you use in your office will probably not be the paint you will use in the classroom or kitchen areas.
Start by selecting paint sample swatches in the color range that you feel will complement the room. Hold them up to your walls to see how each works with your walls and furnishings at different times of the day and with different light.
Purchase test samples and get some inexpensive brushes so that you can test the right colors. You can either paint a 2’ x 2’ square on the wall or if this is not possible use the paint on light colored cardboard and attach to your walls.
The second step involved in selecting the right paint for the job is to select the right finish. There are different paint finishes to match how often the surface will need to be cleaned.
Satin paint is probably the most easily washed with a smooth, velvet like appearance. This paint is best suited for high use areas such as hallways and classrooms.
Semi-gloss paint is most often used to paint accents such as trim and doors. It provides a subtle sheen without being too glossy.
Primer is the first coat used to seal the wall and will create a non-porous surface so that the topcoat can adhere. You can tint your primer by adding a small amount of your paint color to the primer.
Your new paint job may seem overwhelming at first but allow yourself time to adjust. Modify furnishings and accents if needed so that your new color harmonizes with other room elements.
