Choosing a Safe Site for your Center/School

I have been asked to evaluate all kinds of facilities as to their suitability for child care, but none was as horrifying as the previous “glue factory” I was sent to an eastern state to evaluate. I would have saved the client the consultation fee and travel money had I been told up front about the site’s previous use. However, the site was described only as “a property that was being re-purposed.” Yikes! Do you know what is in glue? No wonder the building and site had been vacant for so long.

The Center for Health and Environmental Justice has put together a kit for evaluating school sites. This will prove valuable to communities or individuals who want to protect children’s health by passing laws to prohibit child care from such locations. While each state has licensing laws for child care centers, most of them do not address the environmental health of the center site.
