CENSUS SHOWS INCREASE IN HANDICAPPED CHILDREN

According to the 2000 Census, 5.2 million children--one of every 12--in the US has a physical or mental disability. This is a sharp growth in the nation's young handicapped population over the past decade. The disabilities recorded by the census ranged in severity from mild asthma to serious mental illness or retardation demanding full-time care.
