Quite a change in a quarter century

Location-based entertainment centers that focus primarily on attracting families with children are known as family entertainment centers (FECs). It can be argued what age children FECs primarily attract with their parents. For sake of this article, we will assume it is children age 5 to 14.

Households with 5-14 children are on a long-term decline. A quarter century ago, back in 1990, one-third of all U.S. households had at least one child between the ages of 5 and 14 (32%). That has declined to one-quarter in 2014 (26%), a one-sixth decline.

Back in 1990, married households with children 5-14 were 25% of all households. That has declined by over one-quarter to 18% of all households in 2014. Back in 1990, married households were three-quarters of all households with children 5-14 (75%). In 2014 it had declined to two-thirds (66%). Non-married households with children age 5 to 14 have grown to 1/3 of all households with those age children.
