Flame Retardant Materials in Child Care Centers

Some states require that materials used in child care centers be flame retardant. Flame retardants are starting to raise health concerns among scientists. Studies show that we are constantly exposed to these toxins and they continually collect in our bodies. These chemicals not only significantly disrupt memory, cognitive function and hearing, but they have also been linked to hyperactivity.

When possible, use natural fibers in your child care center. Wooden toys can be effectively cleaned and will outlast plastic ones. Wooden equipment is more durable than plastic equipment. Natural paints and carpeting are being developed that have fewer or no chemicals that off-gas after application.

After years of use, the original formula for Scotch Guard fabric protector spray was banned from use in furniture manufacturing after it was found in human blood. We will see what happens with the flame retardant controversy.
