{"id":471,"date":"2013-12-20T10:11:53","date_gmt":"2013-12-20T15:11:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.whitehutchinson.com\/blog\/?p=471"},"modified":"2013-12-20T10:11:53","modified_gmt":"2013-12-20T15:11:53","slug":"travel-expenditures-since-2005-and-the-great-recession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.whitehutchinson.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/travel-expenditures-since-2005-and-the-great-recession\/","title":{"rendered":"Travel expenditures since 2005 and the Great Recession"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year <i>The Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/i> at <i>TED: The Editor\u2019s <\/i><i>Desk<\/i> posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2013\/ted_20130115.htm\">graph on their website showing \u201cTravel expenditures during the recent recession, 2005-2011<\/a>.\u201d The post stated that 2011 average annual consumer expenditures for travel for pleasure was down 6% from its peak in 2007. When we looked at the data used to generate the graph, we were surprised that it was not inflation-adjusted. Between 2007 and 2011, inflation (the consumer price index) showed that consumer prices had increased by 8.5%.<\/p>\n<p>So to set the record start, we have redone the graph with all expenditures adjusted for inflation and also included 2012 data.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehutchinson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Travel-expenditures-2005-2012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-472\" alt=\"Travel expenditures 2005-2012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whitehutchinson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Travel-expenditures-2005-2012.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.whitehutchinson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Travel-expenditures-2005-2012.jpg 675w, https:\/\/www.whitehutchinson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Travel-expenditures-2005-2012-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When adjusted for inflation, the drop in travel expenditures was much greater than the <em>Bureau<\/em> reported. From its peak in 2007, average household total pleasure travel expenses in 2011 were down 14%, not 6%. Food and beverage was down 9%, lodging down 10%, transportation was down 14% and entertainment fees and admissions (from its peak in 2006) were down 21%.<\/p>\n<p>There was an uptick in expenditures in 2012, but travel expenditures are still down from their peaks:<\/p>\n<p>Total travel expenditures: \u00a0-9% from 2007<\/p>\n<p>Food and beverage: \u00a0-5% from 2007<\/p>\n<p>Lodging: \u00a0-10% from 2007<\/p>\n<p>Transportation: \u00a0-9% from 2007<\/p>\n<p>Entertainment: \u00a0-20% from 2006<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year The Bureau of Labor Statistics posted a graph showing that 2011 household travel expenditures had decreased 6% from their peak in 2007.
